Appreciate Artisanship
I love browsing Fireworks in the Seattle airport—so many shiny, clever things to admire. Their tagline is “celebrating the art in life.”
Continuing our exploration of delight
Go to a store that sells beautiful things and take your time admiring the craftsmanship and the ingenuity. (A kitchen store, a furniture store, a jewelry store, a bakery etc). Remove the possibility of buying anything, instead treat it like an art museum. Engage your senses: What colors and shapes do you see? What textures do you feel? Are there any smells in the air? What sounds do you hear? Why is that thing pleasing to you? Does it evoke an emotion? A memory? Can you appreciate the artistry that goes beyond the functionality? If you were trying to make that thing, how would you use your creativity to bring pleasure to it’s user?
